Hot Tip: Transfer Miles Between Frequent Flier Accounts
|

|
First of all, if you are a member of Starwood Preferred Guest program, you should already know the Starwood points you earn can be transferred to most of the major U.S. airline mileage programs. There is even a 5000 mile bonus if you transfer 20,000 miles at a time.
Starwood Preferred Guest program let you transfer points out, but not in. (That may be a good thing for Starwood members. Letting people transfer points in to Starwood program would likely devalue the highly valued Starwood points) (Click here for some Starwood bonus offers and program benefits information)
Transfer from: None
Transfer to: 29 Major US and Foreign Airline Mileage Programs
So, we have to search for a "gateway" program that let us transfer in and out of the program easily. There are a few options, but only one is good.
First, the only real good option we know:
Amtrak Guest Rewards - Transfer miles out of the program at a 1:1 conversion rate! No annual fee for the program, free to enroll, and no transfer fees! However, it's limited where you can transfer miles from and to. Through Amtrak Guest Rewards you can exchange your continental or midwest miles to Hilton Honors points at 5000 miles to 10000 points.
Transfer from: none
Transfer to: Continental or Midwest or United or Hilton Honors
Now, all the not so good options:
Points.com - You might have heard of them before. But their conversion rates are absolutely terrible. Something like 4:1. That's 4 miles in, 1 mile out! And there is an annual fee.
Hilton Honors Program - This is Hilton's Frequest Guest Program. No annual fee here, but conversion rate is not much better. Somewhere around 3.3 to 1. Conversion rate for transferring miles into Hilton Honors points is not too bad. However, the conversion rate for transferring out of the program is terrible.
Transfer from: American or Midwest
Transfer to: American or Midwest
Diners Club Rewards - This is only a option if you have the Diner Club credit card which has an annual fee of $95. Transfer in is 1:1 and Transfer out is 2:1, so Net conversion rate is 2:1. There is also a transfer fee of $0.95 fee for every 2000 points transferred out.
Transfer from: American or United
Transfer to: Air Canada, Alaska, America West, American, Continental, Delta, Frontier, Midwest, Northwest, Southwest, United, Us Airways

Great News! Delta, Northwest, Continental Alliance
|

|
Starting now, Delta, Northwest, Continental Airline's customers will be able to accrue frequent flyer miles on any of the carriers.
And.. here is what we have been waiting for..
Continental, Delta, Northwest Start Frequent Flyer Redemption July 15
Frequent flyer members of the three airlines will be able to redeem miles for itineraries that include the combination of any Continental, Delta and Northwest-operated flights by using just one award to any of the 374 destinations worldwide served by the three carriers. Customers will be able to book and redeem award travel beginning July 15, 2003.
Note: KLM, Delta's Song and Delta Connection fights by American Eagle are not partner of this alliance at least at this time.

ConsumerReports Article on Frequent Flyer Programs
|

|
ConsumerReports magazine reviews 12 major airline mileage programs in the May 2003 issue. According to the magazine, travelers earn roughly 40% of their miles from non-flight activity. And look for an upcoming mileage alliance from Delta, Continental, and Northwest.
The article offers five common-sense keys to making sure you can cash in your miles:
1. Focus, focus, focus. Don't spread your miles thin by spreading your travel across multiple carriers. Choose one or two airlines for your earning power.
2. Be that flexible, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants traveler you tell your shrink and Sig. O that you are. You're more likely to land an award -- even a cheaper one -- by being able to travel on weekdays. For example, just 20,000 miles can earn you a domestic ticket through U.S. Airways if you travel off-peak. And just 40,000 miles will carry you to Europe.
3. On the other hand, it pays to plan ahead. Some award seats are available as much as 331 days in advance. Then again, you never know if your airline will be around that long.
4. Free is as free does. You may have to use double your miles to get the seat you want in some programs. Again, travel flexibility is key for those who want to use the lowest-cost award tickets.
5. Brace yourself for the cattle car. Consumer Reports says it's getting harder -- and more costly -- to use award miles to upgrade your ticket. If you buy a full-fare ticket on United, you'll need 16,000 miles to move up a few rows. For restricted tickets on American and United, expect to part with 30,000 miles. Call ahead, and remember to stretch your calves before boarding.

British Airway Household Accounts
|

|
British Airway's mileage program is probably the only program that let you collect and redeem BA Miles as a household.
Simply set up a Household Account for yourself and up to 6 other members of your household.
You will be able to set up a Household Account, and add members to it, by using the form available online, from 1 July 2003.
Continue to collect BA Miles individually when you fly as an Executive Club member.
When you want to redeem for a free* flight, if you don't have enough BA Miles individually, you can pool your BA Miles together for travel by one or more members of the household.
There will be no charge to set up a Household Account.

How Frequent Flier Programs Work?
|

|
HowStuffWorks has an excellent article for people who are new to Frequent Flier Programs. This article talks about the background, the basics, as well as how to redeem your miles.
It's a great article for beginners to read. However, there are a few things in the article I have to disagree. The article says a mile is worth 2 cents. Our visitor poll at AirmileOffers.com says a mile is worth 1.5 cents or so. Also, the article talks about converting miles into money or merchandise. However, usually converting miles to merchandise or money is not a good idea. Just keep in mind each mile is worth about 1.5 cent. Your miles are still best used for airline award tickets. Hotel reward points are usually best used for hotel stays.
As for a elite status, unless you are a frequent flyer, you can skip the part that talks about elite status. Elite status is how the airlines reward their best customers by offering some extra benefits such as VIP lines, lounge access, upgrades..etc. Again, unless you are a frequent flyer, you won't benefit much from it anyway.

ARTICLE: Frequent-flier programs here to stay, airlines say
|

|
.. With United and US Airways in bankruptcy reorganization and other carriers changing the rules of their programs, some travelers are quietly redeeming their frequent-flier miles. Based on the recent actions of both airlines and anecdotal reports of passengers rushing to redeem their points, it's possible that more travelers are trying to unload their miles than at any time in recent memory — perhaps even since the creation of these loyalty programs. ..
